How Top Executives Shape Future Business Leaders

06-30-2026

Often one of the most valuable resources for early career growth isn’t a textbook or internship but a candid conversation with someone who has already navigated the path.

At the Mitch Daniels School of Business, the Executive Forum turns that idea into a weekly reality. Led by Lecturer Dave Randich, the course brings accomplished executives — from CEOs and founders to leaders in finance, healthcare, venture capital and advanced manufacturing — into direct conversation with students. The result transcends a guest lecture series. It is a living archive of leadership lessons, distilled from real decisions, setbacks and successes.

Across more than 30 on-stage, in-person interviews in the last academic year, guest speakers touched on the qualities that differentiate high-potential professionals. Beyond technical acuity, executives are looking for curiosity, coachability and a commitment to continuous learning. They point to the importance of emotional intelligence, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to both give and receive feedback. Just as critical is adaptability — what some describe as “cross-pollinated” thinking — where multidisciplinary teams and diverse experiences create more resilient, innovative problem solvers.

Lessons range from industry-specific needs to broadly applicable business skills. Patrick Lenihan explored how enterprise AI strategy is reshaping healthcare and how doctors are using AI in practice. David Pugh reinforced the value of relentless customer-focused culture. Mickey Swortzel provided insights on what VC firms are looking for when assessing startups. Dan Elmhurst inspired students to reframe criticism and credibility. Jack Boudreaux gave advice on building connections on social media, Bevin Maguire spoke on brand voice, Matt Arens on authentic connections, Darrick Weeks on servant leadership, Steve Emch on the winds that strengthen early careers, Josh Thiel on America’s superpower, Tony Denhart on winning in the talent race, and Tracy Page on succession in family firms.

From talent strategy and early career development to venture capital decision-making and nonprofit leadership models, each conversation connects classroom learning to the evolving demands of the marketplace.

Randich reflects on some of the most memorable advice shared by these executives and explains how the course prepares students to enter a dynamic, demanding and increasingly interdisciplinary business world.

For students, the value of Executive Forum is exposure to how decisions are actually made at the highest levels. For executives, the opportunity is equally meaningful. Sharing hard-earned insights not only shapes the next generation of leaders but also sharpens their own thinking — forcing reflection on what truly drives performance, culture and long-term value creation.

In a business environment defined by rapid change — from AI adoption to global market shifts — the ability to learn from experience, especially others’ experience, becomes a competitive advantage. The Executive Forum creates that bridge, translating leadership in practice into leadership in preparation.
