Review the Case Problem

Review the Case Problem

The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) is dedicated to providing comfort and support to families who have lost loved ones in military service. As part of its mission, TAPS has developed a "survivor journey map" to guide its staff in caring for bereaved families and to help survivors navigate their grief journey. However, the current process of creating and updating this map is labor-intensive and limits TAPS' ability to use the map to quickly connect survivors with the most relevant care.

In this case competition, you'll tackle two critical problems:

  1. Automated Journey Mapping: Develop an AI-powered solution to automatically map survivor survey responses to appropriate stages (or "epochs") within the TAPS survivor journey map. This will enable TAPS to quickly and accurately connect survivors with the most relevant resources and support.
  2. Dynamic Journey Map Evolution: Create an innovative methodology to aggregate and analyze survey data, generating updated and improved versions of the journey map over time. This will allow TAPS to adapt their support strategies based on real-time insights from survivor experiences.

By participating in this challenge, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Apply cutting-edge AI and data science techniques to a real-world problem with significant social impact
  • Work with sensitive and meaningful data to improve the lives of military families
  • Showcase your skills in a national competition, with the chance to present your solutions to TAPS leadership

Join us in this Data 4 Good initiative and help TAPS transform its ability to support and care for the families of America's fallen service members. Your innovative solutions could dramatically improve how TAPS allocates resources, personalizes support, and evolves its services to meet the changing needs of military survivors.

Phase 1: Kaggle shared task

Goal: Develop an AI-driven system to accurately classify survivor survey responses into appropriate stages of the TAPS survivor journey map. Use one or more open access LLMs as part of the shared task solution to augment or mitigate labeled data scarcity.

Format: Kaggle shared task

Key Activities:

  • Develop an LLM-based reasoning system to output a stage of the TAPS survivor journey map for a given set of survivor survey results
  • (Optional) Augment existing data with LLMs to either: develop natural language text descriptions of survivors based on numerical and categorical survey results
  • Parse natural language text survey answers into one or more structured fields
  • (Optional) Fine-tune an open-access LLM to improve results

Data:

  • A small number (10’s) of survey responses labeled with an appropriate place for that survivor in the journey map
  • A larger number (1000’s) of unlabeled responses in a test set that are to be labeled and submitted for evaluation
  • Slides or other visuals explaining the existing survivor journey map

Evaluation: Classification accuracy or f1 score

Phase 2: On-site presentation and judging

Goal: Create a methodology to analyze aggregated survey data and generate improved versions of the survivor journey map over time.

Format: In-depth project development and presentation

Key Activities:

  • Sign an NDA for more sensitive data access
  • Gain access to an expanded dataset of survivor surveys and response logs
  • Develop an LLM-based or hybrid (GenAI plus machine learning / analytics) system to aggregate survivor survey and responses into a distilled (and improved) survivor journey map
  • Design visualizations and interfaces to present the evolving journey map
  • Prepare a comprehensive presentation of the solution along with results
  • Travel to Purdue University and present the solution and results

Evaluation: Final presentations will be evaluated based on a forthcoming rubric
