Mitch Daniels School of Business alumnus Sameer Borwankar (PhD, MS, MBA) examined how Meta’s new Community Notes program could reshape misinformation management in an article for The Conversation.
Borwankar, now an assistant professor of information systems at McGill University, explores how Meta’s approach to community-driven fact-checking builds on lessons learned from X’s (formerly Twitter’s) similar initiative. While the program empowers users to add context to potentially misleading content, Borwankar cautions that without open access to data and algorithms, such initiatives risk becoming symbolic rather than substantive.
His central insight: Transparency is the cornerstone of trust. When platforms allow researchers and the public to scrutinize how content is reviewed and displayed, they strengthen both user confidence and accountability. This openness not only improves system design but also counters the perception that platforms are deflecting responsibility for misinformation management.
