Economists to Discuss Policy Framework of the Federal Reserve

Published on 03-27-2025

Registration is open for the next meeting of the Shadow Open Market Committee (SOMC), scheduled for April 7 in Washington, D.C. and hosted by the Daniels School of Business. The meeting will be streamed live and will focus on how the Fed can improve its policy framework, including discussions on how to best achieve its goals using available instruments and how to best communicate its policy strategy.

The SOMC is an independent group of economists that provides external perspectives on policy choices by the Federal Reserve and other leading central banks. Its recommendations are aimed at improving policy discussions to result in improved economic performance.

Jim Bullard, Dr. Samuel R. Allen Dean of the Daniels School, is a member of the SOMC. Bullard came to Purdue from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, where he served for 15 years as president and chief executive officer. He was a part of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which guides the direction of U.S. monetary policy, and he is a frequent guest on business shows at CNBC, Bloomberg, and Fox Business, among many other outlets.

Bullard will conduct an interview with Columbia University Professor Richard Clarida, former vice chair of the Federal Reserve. Other speakers include Mercatus Center Distinguished Senior Fellow Thomas Hoenig, former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City; Roger Ferguson, former Federal Reserve vice chair; Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Donald Kohn, former Federal Reserve vice chair; Vincent Reinhart, chief economist and macro strategist for BNY Mellon Asset Management; California-Berkeley Professor David Romer; and SOMC board members Gregory Hess, Jeffrey Lacker, Andrew Levin, Mickey Levy, Deborah Lucas, Athanasios Orphanides and Charles Plosser.

The SOMC meeting, which is free to attend, runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. Eastern and takes place in Washington, D.C., at 1333 H Street NW in the 10th floor conference room. Space is limited for in-person attendees; the SOMC encourages registration for the virtual option.
