President emeritus of Purdue and former Governor of Indiana Mitch Daniels is calling for a commission, “this time with teeth,” to address the national debt.
“I understand why practicing politicians run away from this question, but as a nation, we won’t be able to do that much longer,” Daniels said.
“This year, we reached a more than symbolic threshold as interest payments on the debt surpassed our investment in national defense,” he noted. “And no nation that has gotten to that point before has come out of it well.”
Daniels appeared on The Law & Liberty Podcast, hosted by James M. Patterson, an associate professor of politics at Ave Maria University and contributing editor at Law & Liberty.
Daniels also reflected on his time at Purdue, noting the university grew by 30 percent the years he served as president. Purdue, he said, is “an institution of higher education that recognizes what needs to be done, has the will and fortitude to do it, (and) not only can survive but come out with a higher, let’s say, market share than it had.”
