Gus De Franco

Accounting
Gus De Franco is an accomplished scholar. He has numerous publications in all the top accounting journals including Journal of Accounting & Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research, and Review of Accounting Studies, as well as Journal of Financial Economics and Management Science. He is serving his second term as Editor of the Contemporary Accounting Research journal. He reviews for these same top journals and was awarded the outstanding reviewer award by The Accounting Review. He has been recognized as the faculty researcher of the year at both his two previous institutions, Freeman School of Business at Tulane University and the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.
Gus De Franco is also an accomplished teacher and leader. He has taught financial accounting, managerial accounting, and financial statement analysis at the undergraduate and MBA level. He developed an accounting analytics course serving all graduate business students. He has taught, mentored and chaired the committees of PhD students. He is proud that almost all of his research has been coauthored with current or former PhD students. At Tulane’s Freeman Business School he was part of the leadership team, serving at various times on the executive committee, chair of the undergraduate committee, accounting area head, Director of the Masters in Accounting Program, and Director of the PhD program.
Like many of Purdue current students and alumni, Gus De Franco is a first-generation college student. Gus attended Western, a public university in Ontario, Canada on scholarship, where he became the business school’s valedictorian. He later received his MBA from Harvard University and his PhD from the Wharton School. He has also been a visiting professor at MIT and the Wharton School. Prior to life in academia, he worked as a marketing product manager at Kraft Foods and an equity research analyst at CIBC capital markets.
