Designing Hybrid Work That Works

07-23-2026

Six years after the pandemic led to widespread remote work, decision-makers face the reality that some degree of remote work is here to stay. In her Westwood Lecture, “Zoom Fatigue and the Science of Recovery — How We Can Thrive at Work and Home,” Allie Gabriel, the Daniels School’s Thomas J. Howatt Chair in Management and director of the Center For Working Well, shares research on how to design and enforce virtual and hybrid work policies that balance visibility, engagement and collaboration without unintentionally increasing fatigue and disengagement.

Gabriel unpacks how workers are adapting to new patterns of connection and creating new workflows. She looks at the ways in which hybrid workers compress their social interactions during in-person days, how they pack deep work into remote days, and why Zoom meetings can be exhausting. Additionally, Gabriel offers strategies for recovery.

View the lecture to understand why some workers prefer and need hybrid work schemes, and how they can still build connection and avoid work creep.
