MIS for MBAs and MS (BAIM)

Why MIS?

In addition to the MBA concentration in MIS, the area also offers MS in BAIM. As information technology plays an ever greater role in organizations and society, those individuals with knowledge and appreciation of such technologies stand to play a greater role in the shaping of the economic, managerial, political and social policies of the future. With this ideal in mind, coursework in MIS offers students an opportunity to develop and refine the skills necessary for competition in the digital age.

Students are welcomed in MIS courses, regardless of whether they are choosing to complete an MIS option or simply take an elective which piques their interest. MIS courses are relevant to all students, but those with a particular interest in technology, human resources, marketing, finance, strategy and operations will find something of value in the various MIS courses available.

Courses You Might Take

Ten elective hours (five courses) are required beyond the core for the MIS option. Of course, you are welcome to take MIS electives even if you are not pursuing the MIS option. No technical expertise is required, just a willingness to learn and explore new ideas and concepts. The MIS faculty especially welcomes those students from non-technology backgrounds to become more familiar with an exciting and opportunity-filled area.

MIS Graduate Course Descriptions

Students with an interest in Finance and/or Accounting might be particularly interested in the Management of Organizational Data, Data Mining (currently offered by the Quantitative Methods area), Information Security, Knowledge Management Systems, and Enterprise Resource Planning courses.

Clubs and Other Organizations

Students interested in MIS might find clubs and organizations as a useful and fun opportunity to interact with others with similar interests. The Management Information Systems Association (MISA) is a primarily undergraduate organization sponsored by the MIS faculty but welcomes graduate members as well. Additionally, the Purdue Polytechnic Institute hosts an Association for Information Technology Professionals (AITP) chapter.
