Message from the Brock-Wilson Center Director

It’s an exciting time on campus.

Between snow and 60 degree days, campus is trying to put its best foot forward for the admitted students who are coming to campus for Purdue's for Me days. The Brock-Wilson Center for Women in Management Ambassadors have built great sessions as part of those days to help prospective students see that we are creating a place that young women can belong.

One way we do that is through the learning community for first-year students. Purdue can feel like a huge school…because it is. But the School of Management and the Women in Management Learning Community are two ways a major research university can become a more intimate setting where students can find their place of belonging.

I am always enthusiastic talking to admitted students. Some are so excited to know their dream is coming true. Others are eager yet overwhelmed as they wade through the decision process.

For some that decision is easier because of the week they spent on campus as part of the Empowering Women in Business summer course. In fact, the course shows up in their applications as one of the reasons why they want to come to campus. One young woman had the following to say about the impact the course had on her. “When I attended “Empowering Women in Business,”  a summer program hosted by the Krannert School, I realized that Purdue University could be the perfect pathway towards accomplishing my career goals. Its extensive array of courses in finance will prepare me for future careers.”

Another participant put it this way: “One of the organizations that I am most excited to get involved with is the Women in Business organization. Over the summer, I completed a high school program led by the Women in Business organization, and I know it will be the perfect opportunity for me to advance my professional interests.”

Do you know a young woman who will be a junior or senior in high school in the fall? Is she interested in business? Then encourage her to apply for the summer course. Because of demand, we will offer the course twice this summer. Your student can apply for July 10-15 or July 17-22. Due to the generosity of friends like you, we are able to offer the course at no cost to students this summer beyond the $60 application fee and travel to and from campus.

You can learn more about this fun-sized course by visiting our summer course webpage

And if you would like to help us keep this impactful course free to future students, consider a gift of $800 (in-state scholarship) or $1400 (out of state scholarship) to help a young attend the camp while she is in high school. She, too, could learn that Purdue and the School of Management are truly where she belongs.

If you will attend the Krannert Alumni Conference April 21-23, be sure to let me know. I’d love to have you join a class or participate in other ways. You can learn more about the conference and coming back to campus.

Thank you for all you do. Boiler Up!
