Admission to Daniels School of Business doctoral programs is limited to students of outstanding promise. We seek individuals who are passionate about solving today’s business challenges through collaborative and thought-provoking research, as well as encouraging and mentoring the business leaders of the future through innovation in the classroom.

To be eligible for admission, applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree. Completing a master’s degree is recommended but not required. There are no required fields of study.

The The Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars (OGSPS) application and all supplemental materials must be received by this date to be considered for review. 

Completed applications undergo review by admissions committees, made up of program faculty and School leadership. The review process begins on January 15 (December 15 for OBHR).

Application Requirements

Academic Transcripts 

Unofficial copies of your academic transcript can be uploaded into the application for review purposes only. If you are recommended for admission and are admitted by the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars (OGSPS), you must submit an official, original transcript bearing the original signature of the registrar and/or the original seal of the issuing institution.

If you accept your admission, you must present all official original transcripts and/or academic documents directly to the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars (OGSPS) upon arrival on campus during check-in in August.

If you are re-applying and have attended another Institution since your last application, you must upload updated, unofficial transcripts into the application for review. If you are recommended for admission, you must submit an official, original transcript bearing the original signature of the registrar and/or the original seal of the issuing institution.

How to Submit Official Transcripts 

Official transcripts and/or English translations must be mailed directly from a Registrar’s office. The Office of Graduate Admissions also accepts official electronic transcripts from accredited U.S. colleges and universities sent via eSCRIP-SAFE, Parchment or directly from the accredited U.S. college or university, and from colleges and universities in India via TrueCopy Credentials or Parchment. These official transcripts must be sent to gradadm@purdue.edu.

The Office of Graduate Admission does not accept electronic transcripts from international colleges or universities. Any transcripts submitted will become property of Purdue University and will not be returned.

International Transcripts and Documentation 

If your native language is not English and you are recommended for admission, you must send both an official transcript in the language of instruction and a certified official English translation. If your degree is not shown as having been awarded directly on the transcript, then you must also provide a certified official copy of your diploma in the language of instruction and a certified official English translation.

Admission Exams

Official GMAT or GRE exam scores are required. Scores must not be more than five years old. Applicants are advised to take the test no later than December or January before the August admission date.

An official score report for the GRE or GMAT must be sent from the appropriate testing service directly to Purdue University.

GRE / GMAT scores will not be waived.

Economics applicants must submit GRE scores.

All Management area applicants and OBHR applicants can submit either GRE or GMAT scores.

English Language Exams

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) must be taken by applicants whose native language is not English. 

The Graduate School will routinely waive the English Proficiency testing requirements for applicants who have received a baccalaureate degree, graduate or professional degree, within the last 36 months prior to the time of recommendation for admission, from a school where English is the primary language of instruction in a country/location where English is the native language. For example, a student seeking admission for Fall 2025 should have had their degree conferred by May 2022.

To be valid for admission, English proficiency test scores (TOEFL and IELTS) must be no more than two years old at the time the recommendation for admission. For example, a student seeking admission for Fall 2025 should present a TOEFL that is no older than May 2023.

The Mitch Daniels School of Business seeks to attain the following preferred minimum language scores for incoming PhD students:

TOEFL IBT Scores

Minimum score: 93

Minimum speaking subscore: 27

The official score report for the TOEFL must be sent from Educational Testing Services (ETS) to Purdue University:

Minimum score: 125

Resume/CV

Upload a current version of your resume or CV into the application.

Academic Statement of Purpose (ASOP)

The academic statement of purpose should not exceed two pages in length addressing the following prompts:

  • What are your professional plans and career goals? How will attending graduate school assist you in reaching those goals?
  • Describe your research, scholarly, or creative interests. What topics are of particular interest to you? Reviewers know that interests change over time but try to be as specific as possible.
  • Discuss how your experiences, skills, and abilities have prepared you for graduate study. Relevant topics may include coursework, work and research experiences, internships, presentations, exhibits, publications, and community service. If you describe a research or scholarly experience, include information on the topic, research mentor, your role, and outcomes.
  • Describe how your skills, preparation, and interests are a match for the program to which you are applying. Identify faculty who share your research and scholarly interests. Reviewers will want to know that you have researched the program, faculty, and key focus areas.

Personal History Statement (PHS)

Required of all applicants:

  • Describe how your background and life experiences contribute to your ability to be both persistent and resourceful in graduate school.
  • Describe how your life experiences have prepared you to contribute to an academic community where scholars with diverse research interests, abilities, backgrounds, and experiences are supported, respected, and valued.

Optional:

  • Please address concerns that you may have that your academic record does not reflect your true capabilities and discuss mitigating factors that have affected your academic record. Reviewers will be interested in understanding your accomplishments relative to your opportunities.

The Academic Statement of Purpose and the Personal History Statement are two of the most important documents in your graduate school application. Information in the Personal History Statement should complement but not duplicate information in the Academic Statement of Purpose.

Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

A minimum of two letters of recommendation is required. You will provide your recommenders name and email address within your application. They will be contacted via email to upload their letter directly into your application.

It is recommended you advise your recommenders to be on the lookout for the email as it will sometimes be sent to spam.

Virtual Video Assessment (Economics Ph.D. Applicants ONLY)

Economics Ph.D. Applicants will be sent a prompt to complete a Virtual Video Assessment after they have submitted an application. Applicants will answer some brief questions related to their area of interest.
