Course Descriptions

Economics of Growth & Innovation - ECON 432

We examine why nations are poor and how they can become rich, including the role of investment, schooling, population growth and technology.  We then explore factors that drive productivity, including how globalization and policy choices affect allocative efficiency, accelerate structural change, and discipline competitive behaviors by domestic firms.  We conclude by exploring a rapidly growing literature on the economics of innovation, including:  why innovation is slowing down; where new ideas come from; how cities become hotbeds of innovation and how this will be affected by remote work; and how innovation can be shaped by choices of firms and by government policies. Throughout we will bring in cutting edge research related to these ideas;  focus relentlessly on data; develop in you the ability to understand and quantitatively implement models explaining growth and innovation; and draw connections to critical decisions made by firms and by individuals (you!) that promote productivity and innovation.

Elective/Cultural Competency - MGMT 390
