From IT Professional to Business Analytics Leader

Pooja Madhav

The journey from IT professional to business analytics leader is one of continuous learning and adaptation. For Vipin Suresh, a Master’s of Business Analytics (MSBA) graduate from Purdue University's Daniels School of Business, this journey exemplifies the transformative power of education and perseverance.

With over a decade of experience in the IT industry, Suresh progressed from a business analyst in India to a data analytics lead in the United States. His roles at various companies provided a strong foundation in data management and business intelligence.

"As I took on increasingly complex roles, I gained insights into every aspect of the data lifecycle," Suresh explains. "This progression showed me the crucial role of robust data infrastructure in decision-making across organizations.

The Purdue decision

Recognizing the need to expand his knowledge to advance his career, Suresh explored educational options. Ultimately, he chose Purdue's online MSBA program. "The curriculum aligned perfectly with my career goals," he says. "The program's strong reputation and positive alumni feedback confirmed it was the right fit for my professional development." It also delighted him to discover Purdue’s link to Neil Armstrong, a figure he’d long admired.

Suresh found the MSBA program to be both challenging and rewarding. "The focus on business case studies and real-life problem-solving provided invaluable experience," he notes. "It wasn't just about absorbing information; it was about applying knowledge to tangible business challenges."

The program's online format proved crucial as Suresh balanced his studies with work and navigated the challenges of COVID-19. He developed a rigorous schedule, allocating 9 hours for work and 5 hours for study daily.

A transformative experience

Despite beginning the program remotely from India, Suresh fully engaged with Purdue's rich networking opportunities. "I interacted with fellow students in various positions, including senior management roles," he shares. "These connections provided valuable insights into different industries and career paths."

The MSBA curriculum offered Suresh a well-rounded education in business analytics. "The program covered crucial areas like IT project management and strategic management," he explains. "Participating in simulations where I took on executive roles allowed me to bridge the gap between technical knowledge and leadership execution."

Suresh approached his degree strategically, using each semester to explore different facets of the business world. "I leveraged every course, focusing on different perspectives each semester," he says. "This approach, combined with the program's flexibility, gave me a comprehensive understanding of how data analytics intersects with various business functions."

Looking forward to new challenges

Reflecting on his journey, which culminated in his graduation in May 2024, Suresh expresses profound satisfaction: "Completing this program has been incredibly rewarding. The knowledge and skills I've gained from both the coursework and the Purdue community have been invaluable. I'm eager to apply these learnings in my career and take on new challenges in business analytics."
