Course Descriptions

The Road to Character in Business: Virtue, Freedom, and Ethical Leadership - DSB 390

What kind of person do you want to become — and what kind of leader do you want to be?

In this study abroad course, you’ll explore those questions while experiencing Scotland, a country shaped by remarkable thinkers, traditions, and ideas about what makes a life worth living. Drawing on David Brooks’s The Road to Character and Jeffrey Rosen’s The Pursuit of Happiness, we’ll explore the difference between the qualities that help us build impressive résumés and the virtues that make for a meaningful life. Students will examine what business contributes to a free society, how principled leaders make difficult decisions, and how character shapes the cultures of the organizations we lead.

Scotland provides an especially rich setting for these conversations, from the intellectual legacy of the Scottish Enlightenment and thinkers such as Adam Smith and David Hume to the country’s history, culture, communities, and contemporary institutions. Through classroom conversations, readings, and experiences beyond the classroom, students will step outside of their familiar environment and reflect on the kind of life and leadership they want to pursue.

Cultural Competency - DSB 390

The cultural competency course is taught by a local professor and will allow students to be fully immersed in a business course with a specific focus on the host city.

Both courses are supplemented with cultural activities, excursions, and company visits.
