Florence provides a particularly rich setting for studying investments. The city was one of the most important centers of banking, commerce, and financial innovation during the Renaissance, and Florentine merchants and bankers helped shape many of the financial practices that underpin modern finance. Studying modern investment theory in this historical setting will allow students to connect contemporary ideas about risk, return, capital allocation, and financial markets with the longer evolution of finance and investing.
Investing is fundamentally about making decisions under uncertainty: how to allocate capital, evaluate risk, and determine what an asset is worth. This course introduces the financial theory and quantitative tools behind modern investment decisions, covering the relationship between risk and return, portfolio construction and diversification, asset pricing, and the valuation of equities, fixed-income securities, and derivatives. Through case discussions and applied problems, students will build a conceptual framework for evaluating investment decisions that extends across different markets and economic environments.
The DSB 390 cultural competency course is taught by a local professor and will allow students to be fully immersed in a business course with a specific focus on the host city.
Both courses are supplemented with cultural activities, excursions, and company visits.
