The Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) program provides students an exceptional opportunity to earn academic credit while engaging in hands-on, interdisciplinary research and design projects. Students collaborate with peers from diverse majors across multiple semesters, working under the guidance of faculty mentors on real-world challenges that foster creativity, innovation, and teamwork.
VIP teams are uniquely structured to uphold vertical integration, bringing together undergraduate students from various academic levels. With teams typically consisting of 10–20+ members, this large-scale program allows students to gain long-term experience, as they can participate and earn credit in VIP for up to four years. Many VIP projects span decades, contributing to their enduring impact.
As part of the VIP program, the IBE EV GoKart Team unites students from different academic cohorts to design and build the innovative Krannert/IBE EV GoKart. This project challenges students to apply their design, engineering, and problem-solving skills while fostering teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The team is organized into specialized sub-teams, each contributing to the overall success of the project:
Together, these sub-teams prepare for the evGrandPrix, an exciting annual event hosted at Purdue University’s Grand Prix Track each April. Through this project, students gain invaluable experience that bridges academics and practical application, showcasing their skills on a highly visible platform.
Since its debut in 2010, the EV Grand Prix has been a premier event for electric vehicle racing. This unique competition challenges teams to excel in three key areas:
