Think Summer An extension of Purdue's successful "Think Summer" campaign, the Krannert Summer Business Academy offers online courses for students minoring in economics or management.

Expanding Accessibility

Summer Business Academy offers suite of online courses for management minors

It may still be spring, but the Krannert School is encouraging undergraduates from other Purdue academic areas to plan ahead and complete their management or economics minor by taking classes fully online over two to three summers through its Summer Business Academy.

“Today’s students want to move through their academic endeavors quickly, flexibly and affordably,” says Charlene Sullivan, Krannert’s associate dean of undergraduate programs. “The Krannert Summer Business Academy provides an accessible foundation of courses while enabling students more opportunities to incorporate internships, study abroad and research into their undergraduate experience and keeping them on a fast track to graduation.”

John Fassnacht, director of online and hybrid learning at the Krannert School, says the Summer Business Academy is an outgrowth of Purdue’s successful “Think Summer” initiative, which has increased summer enrollment by nearly 39 percent since 2012.

“Whether you plan to stay on the West Lafayette campus, study abroad in Paris, complete an out-of-state internship or start a business, the Krannert Summer Business Academy features customized paths to meet your educational goals,” Fassnacht says. “You can literally earn your management or economics minors from anywhere in the world.”

At Purdue, summer classes are broken into modules to accommodate the variety of the season's activities. Summer tuition also is affordable, charging a flat rate for anything between 6 to 9 credit hours or a per credit rate for less than 6 hours or more than 9 hours.

“Keeping your course load in that range guarantees more education for the money,” Fassnacht says, “but one course still makes sense if you decide to do an internship or study abroad.”

The Krannert Summer Business Academy currently includes 16 courses for 2017: Introductory and Intermediate Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Accounting; Econometrics; Industrial Organization; Financial Management; Business Statistics; Marketing; Business Law; Management Information Systems; Strategic Management; Human Resources; and Organizational Behavior.

Benya Chongolnee, a Purdue Polytechnic Institute sophomore who is majoring in computer and information technology and earning a minor in management, says she’ll consider the Krannert Summer Business Academy as she finalizes her course selections for the spring semester and her plans for summer.

“I’ll be completing an internship in North Carolina, so being able to earn credits toward my management minor at the same time sounds like a good opportunity,” she says. “I’ve never taken an online course at Purdue, but the Krannert Summer Business Academy makes me want to try it.”
