Managing Global HR: An Expat in Paris - MGMT 390
80% of midsize and large companies currently send professionals abroad. According to the National Foreign Trade Council, there were 250,000 Americans on assignments overseas. The estimate average one-time cost for relocating an expatriate is $60,000; an expatriate manager’s average compensation package is around $250,000 and the cost of unsuccessful expatriate assignment (early return) is about $100,000. The failure rate for expatriate assignment amongst US firms had been estimated between 10 and 20%, because of adjustment difficulties; and of those who stayed, performance is not up to expectations; and after returning, many join a competitor. The seminar will consider different issues and challenges linked to international professional mobility, with Paris as the case study.
Although when most people think of Paris, they think of iconic sights like the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Arc de Triomphe, the capital city is also one of the most important business, financial, and political centers of the world. Paris Region has one of the highest GDPs of any city in Europe. It is home to most Fortune Global 500 companies that specialize in insurance, banking, and energy, as well as important international agencies such as the OECD and UNESCO.
Topics of discussion will include international HR management strategy; globalization and selection of expatriates; economic and political systems that influence expatriation in France; French culture and its impact on doing business; and the role of labor unions in France.
