    No retailer wants to stock its shelves with products that aren’t selling, but it’s a challenge for businesses to come up with just the right inventory balance. Using data from one national retailer’s top-performing stores, a group of students in Krannert’s Master of Science in Business Analytics and Information Management (MSBAIM) program found a solution they estimate could lead to an 11 percent profit increase for the company.

    All Electric Cars by 2035? Is it Possible?

    With gas prices soaring, some drivers and companies may be turning to electric vehicles for refuge. General Motors plans to phase out making gas cars by 2035. “This was happening before this war and this crisis,” said Ananth Iyer, senior associate dean in Purdue’s Krannert School of Management. “How do we bring the community along? You look at the price of a fully battery operated vehicle, and it’s pretty steep compared to the regular car.”

    Purdue Researchers Led by Krannert’s Pengyi Shi Receive Shah Lab’s 2022 Seed Grant Award

    Purdue University researchers Pengyi Shi, an associate professor of management, Nan Kong, a professor of biomedical engineering, and Omolola A. Adeoye-Olatunde, an assistant professor of pharmacy practice, were recently selected to receive the Shah Family Global Innovation Lab’s 2022 Seed Grant Award for their proposal to co-develop a digital solution and decision support system addressing the youth substance abuse crisis in Aru, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

    Complementary Learning: MSGSCM student masters her master’s program

    Sara Fortman picked up her first college degree, a BS in Supply Chain Management Technology, from the Purdue Polytechnic Institute in May 2021. She was awarded her second, a MS in Global Supply Chain Management, from Purdue’s Krannert School of Management in May 2022. “I fell in love with Purdue when I tagged along on my brother’s college tours,” she says. “When it was my turn to tour colleges, I fell in love with Purdue all over again. It had everything I wanted.”

    Mahalakshmi Vasudevan’s journey to Purdue’s Krannert School of Management began in an Indian village where most women were expected to lead families, not companies. Her upbringing in an orthodox family added to the challenge. “I was the first woman in my family to attend college, so there was a lot of resistance at first,” she says. “I eventually convinced my parents to let me get a bachelor’s degree in computer science even though they viewed it as a field for men.”

    Prasad Raghu’s arrival at Purdue’s Krannert School of Management as a student in the MS in Global Supply Chain Management (MSGSCM) program seemed like a natural transition after working in industry for nearly nine years. “I chose Purdue as it’s consistently ranked in the top five for my areas of interest. It’s reputation and brand recognition, global alumni network, and access to cross disciplinary resources only made my decision easier," he says.

    What Works to Retain Staff: Purdue study finds commonalities in Indiana manufacturers with low turnover

    For the past three years, DCMME (Dauch Center for the Management of Manufacturing Enterprises) at Purdue University have been surveying human resources managers at manufacturing companies in the 10-county area around Purdue. Eighty-three percent of more than 100 surveyed companies reported staff turnover as their leading concern. The most common figure for staff turnover is 40% per year, with most in shop-floor, hourly paid jobs.

  • ESC awards grant to Krannert faculty member for community-based research on criminal justice system

    The Engagement Scholarship Consortium (ESC) has awarded Krannert Associate Professor Pengyi Shi a seed grant for her proposal titled “A Community Approach for Racial Justice: Decision Analytics Using Fair Machine Learning and Optimization.” Shi’s research focuses on building data-driven, high fidelity models and developing predictive and prescriptive analytics to support decisions making under uncertainty in healthcare and service systems.

Experts including Ananth Iyer, the Susan Bulkeley Butler Chair in Operations Management at Purdue University, say a break in the county’s supply chain means shortages and price increases, at least temporarily.
