PhD Alumni

1997
Beck Taylor,
PhD, MSM ’95, was recently appointed the 18th president of Whitworth University, a private liberal arts institution in Spokane, WA.
Taylor previously served as dean of the Brock School of Business at Samford University in Birmingham, AL, where he helped build a $100 million endowment for the school, established eight new academic programs, and earned recognition from the U.S. Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship in 2010 as the nation’s top entrepreneurship emerging program

Vivekanand Jayakumar,
PhD, BS (ECON) ’98, is an assistant professor of economics at the University of Tampa in Tampa, FL.

1962
Michael Borkowsky,
MSIA, of Greenwich, CT, was recently elected to The Cooper Union Alumni Hall of Fame. He has been a member of the school’s board of trustees since 1996 and is a past president of the alumni association.


 

1969
William E. Crisick,
MSIA, of Walnut Creek, CA, is principal modelist at Financial Modeling Specialists, a firm he founded 12 years ago to provide financial modeling and business planning capabilities to emerging and established businesses.


 

1972
Max E. Rumbaugh Jr.,
MSM, of Scottsdale, AZ, was elected as the 2010 president of the Scottsdale Sister Cities Association.
He has been an active leader of programs that encourage students to become more internationally aware and involved. He has served as the youth committee chair of SSCA for the past three years and will continue to serve as the Scottsdale Rotary Club youth exchange chair.


 

1973
Thomas J. Howatt,
MSM, BSIM ’72, president and CEO of Wausau Paper, was elected chair of Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, a 3,500-member business trade group and the state’s largest business lobbying organization.


Frank Szczepanski, MSM, BSIM ’72, and Tom Szczepanski, BSM ’80, along with Dr. Wei He, who earned a PhD in chemistry at Purdue, are co-founders of IVDiagnostics, which is headquartered at Purdue Research Park and was recently awarded the Olin Cup by the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. Frank leads the company as president and CEO, while Tom serves as director of marketing and sales.


 

1977
Marshall Larsen,
MSIA, CEO of Goodrich Corp., is featured in Chief Executive magazine’s Global Top 200 CEOs list.
Venu Srinivasan, MSM, of Madras, India, was honored with the Padma Shri from the president of India. Padma Shri is an award given by the government of India to Indian citizens to recognize their distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity. Srinivasan also has received the Order of Merit for his diplomatic services from the president of South Korea.


 

1979
Tetsuro Matsumoto,
MSM, was appointed representative and president of Futuregement Co. Ltd., an asset management company in Tokyo, Japan, providing a range of services on income-producing properties primarily for overseas institutional investors. Matsumoto also is a senior fellow for FISCO, a Tokyo-based investment information company.


 

1983
Matthew Mohr,
MSM, president of Dacotah Paper Co., recently published his seventh book, “3D Living,” which explores living with determination, discipline and direction to get what you want in life. In addition to his books, Mohr is a regular contributor to Prairie Business magazine and has written for the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.


 

1987
Christine Kowalski,
MSM, was named senior vice president of operations for ev3, a medical device company in the neurovascular and peripheral vascular markets. Kowalski previously served as group vice president of operations for Boston Scientific.


 

1992
Stephen P. Laughlin,
MSM, is vice president and the application innovation services leader for IBM Global Business Services­–Growth Markets Unit. Laughlin, his wife, Janelle, and their three children relocated to Shanghai, China, over the summer.


 

1998
Walter Griebenow,
MSIA, is actuarial manager at Pacifico Peruano Suiza, an international insurance company based in Lima, Peru.

10th Anniversary Year
Darin M. Gesse,
MSM, of Farmington Hills, MI, is on a temporary assignment in Seoul, South Korea, to lead advanced vehicle program management activities for General Motors.


 

2003
Brian E. Stewart,
MBA, of Victoria, Australia, married Taryn Morris in Diamond Creek, Australia, on December 5, 2009.


 

2004
Brice Barrett,
MBA, was named a 2010 ‘Forty Under 40’ winner by the Portland Business Journal. Barrett is executive director of the Pacific Northwest Defense Coalition, a trade association dedicated to improving the defense and security-contracting climate in the Pacific Northwest. He also is involved in the Wounded Warrior Project, which attempts to help transitioning wounded vets find treatment and employment.

(LA ’03), Indianapolis, IN, welcomed the birth of their daughter, Eliza Kathryn, on April 13, 2009. Eliza loves the Boilermakers already!

BSM, of Rolling Hills Estates, CA, and his wife, Kim, celebrated with their son, Andy, after he was awarded an Academy Award for Visual Effects for his work in “Avatar.”

second book, “Women Count: A Guide to Changing the World.”

Bruce E. Munk,
BSIM, and Karen E. Johnson (CFS ’77) were married on October 10, 2009, in Carmel, IN.


 

1972
Dennis E. Grable,
BSIM, of Springboro, OH, retired from Delphi Corp. after 38 years of service. He was the global manufacturing chief engineer of the compressor product line of Delphi Thermal Systems in Dayton, OH.


 

1974
Vicky Bailey,
BSIM, was appointed to the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future by U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu. Bailey has formerly served as commissioner of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and assistant secretary for policy and international affairs for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Jerilyn S. (Rappe) O’Dell,
BSIM, of Bellbrook, OH, has earned her sixth pink Cadillac from Mary Kay Cosmetics. She has been with Mary Kay for 24 years.

1981
Bob Toth,
BSIM, president and CEO of Polypore International, met with and introduced President Barack Obama during a visit to the company’s Charlotte, NC, Celgard LLC facility, which recently received a stimulus grant for the production of lithium battery separators.


 

1982
Andy Berg,
BS (ACCT), principal, co-founder and CEO of Homrich Berg, was recognized by the Atlanta Business Chronicle as one of the city’s top financial leaders in the publication’s 2010 ‘Who’s Who’ section and its ‘Power 50 Banking and Finance’ list.


 

1984
Renee Selman,
BSIM, was appointed president of Catalina Health Resource, a division of Catalina Marketing Corp. in St. Petersburg, FL, where she is responsible for managing strategic direction, day-to-day operations and overall unit performance. Selman brings to Catalina more than 20 years of experience at Johnson & Johnson, where she most recently served as worldwide president of its Ethicon Women’s Health and Urology business.

Margaret A. Wood, BSM, of Indianapolis, IN, was named a CFO of the Year Honoree by the Indianapolis Business Journal
in December 2009. Wood is currently CFO of Arbor Homes LLC in Indianapolis.

Matt Crouch,
BSM, is deputy associate administrator for
administration at the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration, where he provides leadership and management on all matters related to information technology, human resources management, acquisitions management, facilities and logistics, organizational analysis and management planning.

Thomas A. Holland,
BSIM, of Portland, OR, and his wife, Terri, welcomed the birth of their daughter, Alexis Deborah, on February 16, 2010. She and her brother are being raised as Boilermakers from the start!


 

Rusty Zay, BSM, was appointed vice president of global marketing at Tennant Co. in Minneapolis, MN. Zay previously served as general manager of KitchenAid Brand at Whirlpool Corp.

David C. Cooper,
BSM, of Noblesville, IN, was named among the top young public funds investment professionals in the nation by the business editors of Institutional Investor News. He was elected as one of 12 Rising Stars of Public Funds.

BSM, and her husband, Ryan, welcomed the birth of their second son, Zachary David, on March 26, 2010.

BSM, and his wife, Alicia, of Carmel, IN, welcomed the birth of their second son, Henry, on June 20, 2010. Henry also was welcomed home by big brother, Isaac.


 

Julie K. (Williams) Hendon, BSM, of West Lafayette, IN, and her husband, Ian R. Hendon (T ’02), welcomed the birth of their son, Miles Russell, on March 15, 2010. Miles also was welcomed by big sister, Melia.

BSM, is the Indian market consultant-business promotion for Focus India, a division of the Piemonte Agency for Investments, Export and Tourism in Torino, Italy.

BS (ACCT), of Lafayette, IN, and her husband, Donnie, welcomed the birth of a daughter, Kinley Morgan, on July 7, 2009.

Alexander (Alex) W. Fenske,
BSM, of Park Forest, IL, is now a member of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Oak Lawn, IL. He sells residential real estate throughout Chicago’s south suburbs and other parts of the city and specializes in buyer agency.


 

2007
Kristina Glithero,
BSM,
received a University Co-op
Public Interest Award from the University of Texas School of Law in honor of her commitment to public service. Among other activities, Glithero participated in the Criminal Defense Clinic and the Transnational Worker Rights Clinic, and served as editor-in chief of the American Journal of Criminal Law. She was also a recent contestant and second-place winner on the TV game show “Jeopardy!”
