Our program trains students to produce high-quality research and teaching in the field of Strategic Management and prepares them to pursue careers as tenure-track faculty at top academic research institutions. It is not expected that successful applicants will have prior background in management or business schools.
All Strategic Management PhD students are required to:
- Complete a minimum of 12 credits of seminars in strategic management.
- Complete a minimum of 48 credits of appropriate graduate coursework.
- Pass preliminary examination the summer after the 2nd year in the program.
- Develop effective teaching skills through serving as a teaching assistant or course instructor.
- A minimum of once a year presentation at department proseminar.
- Submit and defend a dissertation proposal.
- Complete and defend a dissertation.
Coursework Requirements
General Managerial Skills Coursework
As a general managerial skills requirement, doctoral students can take any two of the following courses (can be waived for MBA graduates)
- MGMT 600 Accounting for Managers
- MGMT 610 Financial Management
- MGMT 620 Marketing Management
- MGMT 660 Introduction to Operations Management
- OBHR 681 Managing Behavior in Organizations
Research-Methods Coursework
As a research-methods requirement, doctoral students can take research methods courses in the following two different tracks and a minimum of 15 credit hours.
Strategic Management (Major) Coursework
To satisfy the strategic management major area requirement, a student must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours of Strategic Management Seminars.
Strategic Management (Minor) Coursework
To satisfy the Strategic Management minor area requirement, a student must complete a minimum of 6 credit hours of doctoral level courses from related fields. Minors can be designed by students with help from their advisor.
