Guidelines for Grading and Academic Standing

- Have no D, F or NP grades on his/her record. If a student obtains any D, F or NP grades, he/she will be immediately placed on probation. All courses for which a D or F is received must be retaken, and a grade of C or better must be earned before the probationary status is lifted and the student can graduate. If a student took a class as a Pass/No Pass (P/NP) and obtains a NP, the class must be retaken and a P earned before the student can graduate.
- Maintain at least a 3.0 CGPA. If a student fails to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0, he/she cannot graduate and will have to work on a plan of completing the study with the master’s office in consultation with the Academic Program Director.
- A student will be placed on academic probation at the end of any module (and after accumulating at least a total of 8 credit hours in the program) if cumulative grade point average (CGPA) falls below 3.0.
- A student on academic probation will have a prescribed number of credit hours to improve the CGPA before being subject to withdrawal from the program. The credit hours and the timeline to improve the CGPA will be determined by the Academic Program Director assisted by the Online Program. The student will also need to demonstrate upward trajectory in CGPA while being in academic probation status. Once the student is placed on probation, the academic advisor will monitor grades to make sure the student makes progress.

Academic Withdrawal
If a student is withdrawn from the program for failing to meet the minimum academic standards and he/she believes extenuating circumstances warrant his/her reinstatement, he/she has the right to petition the Academic Program Director for reinstatement to the program. If a student is reinstated to the program, he/she will be on probation until a 3.0 CGPA is earned by taking a prescribed number of credit hours in a specified time frame.
Grading Policy
The MS Econ Online degree program follows the +/- grading policy established by the University and strongly recommends that teachers in the online program assign grades using pluses and minuses and adhere to agreed upon grading guidelines that specify target grade distributions. The efficacy of this grading system depends upon it being consistently utilized across the online master’s curriculum such that faculty employ roughly similar grade distributions. The following guidelines are recommended for grade distributions:
- The suggested target grade distribution for all core courses is 35-40% A/A-, 50-55% B+/B’s, 5-10% B-’s, 0-%5 C+ or below resulting in approximately an average Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.35 for each core course where the GPA is calculated as A = 4, A- = 3.70, B+ = 3.30, B = 3.00, B- = 2.70, C+ = 2.30, C = 2.00, C- = 1.70, D+ = 1.30, D = 1.00, D- = .70 and F = 0.00.
- The suggested target grade distribution for elective courses is 40-50% A/A- , 40-55% B+/B, 0-10% B-, and 0- 5% C+ or below resulting in approximately an average GPA of 3.42 for each elective course where the GPA is calculated as A = 4, A- = 3.70, B+ = 3.30, B = 3.00, B- = 2.70, C+ = 2.30, C = 2.00, C- = 1.70, D+ = 1.30, D = 1.00, D- = .70 and F = 0.00.
At the end of each seven-week module, student progress will be summarized by the Krannert Online Master’s Program and then reviewed by the Academic Program Director. Decisions will be finalized by the Academic Program Director who may consult individual instructors.
